PBS shares PRS’ concern over peninsula teachers for Sarawak

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) is backing Parti Rakyat Sarawak’s (PRS) concerns over the prospect of 80,000 teachers from Peninsula Malaysia being transferred to Sarawak next year, which is seen as a negative development for locals who are interested in teaching.
Supporting the statement from PRS President Dato Sri Dr James Masing, PBS Secretary General Datuk Henrynus Amin questioned the rationale if the allegations are indeed true.
“There are tens of thousands of qualified and genuinely interested local youths ready to take up the challenge of becoming teachers in Sabah and Sarawak.
“PBS has no plausible explanation for the massive transfer of teachers from peninsula Malaysia to either Sabah or Sarawak.
“While it may have been justifiable 20 years ago, today, that is no longer possible,” he said in a statement.
Dr Masing was quoted yesterday as saying that he feared the move would be implemented at the expense of potential Sarawakian teachers.
Henrynus said: “If the news is true, there would be a significant political impact, since local youths who are genuinely interested in becoming teachers, but are still unemployed, would be deprived of job opportunities.”
“The Education Ministry must, therefore, reconsider its policy of sending massive numbers of teachers from Peninsula Malaysia to Sabah and Sarawak,” he added.
PBS urged the federal government and, in particular, the ministry concerned, to open new opportunities for qualified youths from Sabah and Sarawak for training as teachers to serve the local community.
“Our children are bright and willing to serve the nation as teachers, even in remote places, if they are given the chance,” he said. — Bernama
