KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 3,474 eligible students have been approved to receive scholarships for postgraduate studies this year under the “MyBrain15″ programme.
Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Hou Kok Chung said they were among the 6,874 applicants for two schemes under MyBrain15, namely the Sponsorship Programme for a Doctorate degree within the country (MyPhD) and the Sponsorship Programme for a Master’s degree within the country (MyMaster).
“This year’s target of 650 recipients for MyPhD has been encouragingly over-subscribed, with close to 1,200 applications received. To date, 672 have been approved, more than the number allocated for the year,” he said at the The Sun newspaper and Malaysian Association of Private Colleges and Universities (MAPCU) Higher Education Scholarship Awards ceremony here, today.
Each recipient receives a maximum of RM24,000 in tuition fees, irrespective of whether the study is done at a public or private institution of higher learning. Another RM5,000 is given as journal and thesis allowances.
As to the MyMaster scheme, Dr Hou said, of the 8,000 scholarships made available this year, 2,802 were approved from a total of 5,674 applications received, due to the stringent selection process.
Dr Hou said the government had committed a total of RM2.6 billion under the 10th Malaysia Plan 2011-2015 for the programme to achieve the objective of producing 60,000 PhD holders by 2020.
“Malaysia is in need of highly knowledgeable intellectuals to spur the growth of research and innovation to succeed in becoming a high-income nation driven by innovation,” he said.
Along with MyMaster and MyPhD, Mybrain15′s two other schemes are the Industrial PhD Programme and Public Institution of Higher Learning Academic Training Programme (SLAI).
At the function, 41 students received a total of RM4.5 million worth of scholarhips pledged by 16 private colleges and universities.- BERNAMA
