AMIABLE: Members from the media get acquainted with each other

MIRI: The Media Association of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will be holding workshops and activities to help members improve their skills in videography, photography and journalism.

“An upcoming workshop entitled ‘Producing News That Get Published’ will give members pointers on identifying newsworthy stories and publicising them through media releases,” revealed the association’s president Amy Lim during a recent welcoming party for members during their mid-year study break.

The workshop will be conducted by staff of the university’s Corporate Communications Department.

The party saw members participating in fun and games facilitated by Media Association secretary Julius Tan and emcee Anusha Shanmugaveloo.

The event was followed by a workshop the next day conducted by the Media Association committee.

Photography manager Jonathan Mah gave members an insight into how Canon cameras are made while Print News manager Abel Wong pointed out common spelling errors in newspapers. Chief Editor Siah Shin Ning and Video News manager Joanne Ting spoke about their experiences shooting video footage at concerts.

Participant Josephine Joeyna Joseph Jantan commented on the workshop where media students learn from Media Association committee members and industry professionals with practical experience in videography, photography and journalism.

“I not only got to learn and upgrade my skills, but had fun too,” Josephine said.

Media Association is a club for media students of the university under its Department of Media, Culture and Communication. Formed last semester, it allows media students of Curtin Sarawak to mingle and learn from seniors as well as practice what they had learnt in the classroom.
