GLORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT: Staff and trainees of PPKS Mukah after receiving the Quality Environment Certification (5S) from the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC).

SIBU: Sarawak Skills Development Centre (PPKS), Mukah received the Quality Environment Practices Certification (5S) from the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) recently.

The 5S is an acronym for five Japanese words: Seiri (Sorting), Seiton (Set In Order), Seiso (Sweeping), Seiketsu (Standardising) and Shitsuke (Sustaining).

It is about a standardised and systematic management of workplace that enables employees of an organisation to work in a conducive, relaxed and safe environment.

PPKS’ preparations for the certification kicked off on Jan 14 with the Gotong Royong Perdana which involved all staff and students.

PPKS Mukah regional director Albar Abdul Rahman chairs the steering committee comprising five working committees responsible for training, promotion, audit, safety and environment, health and documentation.

PPKS Mukah is divided into four zones: Acacia (yellow), Mawar (red), Iris (blue) and Lavender (purple).

Various courses, briefings and training sessions had been and will be held to help staff and students adapt to the 5S culture.

Activities are held every Friday evening.

A monthly bulletin helps disseminate information on the 5S.

On June 21, Suhaimy Abdul Talib from the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) Sarawak arrived at PPKS Mukah to conduct the audit for the Quality Environment Practices Certification (5S).

“The next target of PPKS Mukah is to achieve ISO certification,” enthused Albar.
