KUCHING: Teachers are urged to take up a second degree or masters programme for their development, said Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah.
Apart from that graduates who have problems finding jobs are also encouraged to do their masters programme that in turn will make them more marketable, gain earning power and a better salary.
She stressed that there is a difference in a degree (which is a basic requirement) and a postgraduate degree.
“The government encourages teachers to do their masters or doctorate programme and the state puts emphasis on taking up another degree. A first degree is basic and they are advised to have another degree,” said Fatimah at the launch of Dual Award Master’s Programme at Inti College Sarawak here yesterday.
This degree will enable fresh graduates and working adults to earn the dual award of an MBA from Inti International University and a Master of Arts in Management Studies from University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom.
“University of Hertfordshire is ranked among the top four per cent of universities in the world in 2011 by Times Higher Education, and was recently selected as one of the world’s top 100 universities aged under 50. I am also pleased to learn that there will be opportunities for students and faculty of Inti to interact and learn from visiting academics from Hertfordshire.
“I am also pleased to note that the industry-development curriculum for the dual award Master’s programme utilises the ‘problem-based learning’ and ‘project-based learning’ which will expose students to both real and simulated business problems and environments,” Fatimah said.
She added that the mix of real industry training, work-based learning and employer mentorship and coaching will ensure that graduates have the knowledge and skills to thrive when opportunities like Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) are created.
She said that SCORE is one of the five development corridors that is poised to be the major catalyst of growth and development in the central region of Sarawak.
To fulfil the human resource needs of the corridor, an estimate of 600,000 professionals and other skilled workers are required. She stressed that the figure is not inclusive of human resource needs created via spin-off industries.
“By providing excellent teaching and learning facilities and career-focused programmes to students and by forming strong partnerships with education and industry leaders, Inti is in an excellent position to support the state government’s efforts to boost the local economy and the knowledge and skills of Sarawakians.”

The opportunity to pursue the Dual Award Master’s Programme will be available at Inti College Sarawak in Sept.
“We are offering a dual award programme that will enable students to receive an MBA from Inti International University and a Master of Arts in Management Studies awarded by University of Hertfordshire upon successful completion. We are also expanding the content to include international case studies from Ivy League institutions,” said Inti College Sarawak chief executive and principal Ivy Lau.
She added that students will develop key management competencies like strategic analysis, decision making and an appreciation of global business challenges.
The dual award Master’s programme provides learners a comprehensive suite of business disciplines and elective modules to suit career aspirations. Areas of specialisation include Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Management.
To suit the needs of working adults and fresh graduates who wish to pursue postgraduate studies while embarking on a career, classes are held during the weekday evenings and selected weekends.
Enrolment is now open and classes will commence on Sept 3. The entry requirement is an honours degree from a recognised university or a professional qualification recognised by Inti International University.
