MIRI: The ‘Majalah 3’ of TV3 has received good remarks from the Iban community for the good work in highlighting SK Ulu Lubai.
They were both inspirational and nostalgic stories on how a small rural-based school could achieve such an outstanding result, making it the top 23 performing schools across the country.
This indicates that economic and other shortcomings do not deter dedicated pupils, teachers and parents from succeeding as long as they have the determination to move ahead.
These were the views of an Iban intellectual Telajan Luyoh when
asked to comment on Majalah 3 about the school which was aired on Saturday.

“It is fascinating and nostalgic because it reminds us, especially the rural children, of our days of education, survival and persistence despite being children of farmers and rubber tappers, and faced with many difficulties and obstacles,” he said when contacted by The Borneo Post yesterday.
The programme is indeed very inspirational to both the Ibans and the Bumiputera community as a whole, especially the younger generation.
He said good educational achievement was the key to future success in life, and was very close to the hearts and minds of most children and parents.
Telajan believed that for the rural-based folks, it was essential as they were moving forward to unlock both the social and economic weaknesses within the community, along with the rest.
“Good education will ensure that we will be able to participate more effectively within the country’s economic mainstream and social programme, as being actively launched by the government of the day,” he stressed.
On SK Ulu Lubai, he said credit should be given to the parents and teachers for their concerted efforts to achieve excellence.
This manifested that studying in rural schools was as good as anywhere else and these schools could produce successful pupils as compared to the urban ones, in spite of facing various inadequacy in terms of facilities and access to IT.
He noted that the programme and the joint efforts of the pupils
and the longhouse residents provided good coverage of a rural school in Sarawak.
