SIBU: The multi-racial and multi-religious Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) hits out at Perkasa for raking up sensitive issues that can ignite tension, disunity and misunderstanding among the various races.
Throwing its weight behind PRS president Dato Sri Dr James Masing, its president, William Ghani Bina, stressed yesterday that nobody should use race or religious issues to champion themselves.
“That will have adverse impact on the existing unity and harmony among the various races that have been living like brothers and sisters all this while,” Ghani said.
Echoing Masing’s view, he described the move of Perkasa chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali as having gone overboard, showing disrespect for other races and religions and contradicting the 1Malaysia concept.
Citing STU, which was established in 1965, he said it had always been a multi-racial and multi-religious and “that is the way it is going to stay.” Added Ghani: “As far as we are concerned, we have always accepted Islam as the official religion of Malaysia and we are very happy with that.
At the same time, other religions can be practised peacefully.” He hoped that nobody or organisation would again bring up such issues that could ignite tensions and misunderstanding.
Even in politics, various parties with different backgrounds worked together, he said.
