SIBU: Former
SMK St Teresa, Kuching alumnus Yasmin Sarwar recently won the United Kingdom’s
Best Science Teacher Award for 2011 during the Pearson Teaching Awards in the
United Kingdom.
Yasmin, who is Cardfiff Sixth Form College associated principal,
was invited by British Prime Minister David Cameron to attend the reception at
his official residence of 10 Downing Street.
The Pearson academic company issues a number of awards each year
to recognise excellence in various teaching specialities.
Yasmin was nominated by a number of Cardiff Sixth Form College
students and was short-listed to speak to the judges and demonstrate her skill
in the classroom.
It was a nerve-racking experience, especially as parents and
fellow teachers were invited to be present for part of the full-day visit. The
whole college was thrilled when Yasmin was announced the winner after a
hard-fought competition among some of the most experienced teachers in Wales.
College executive director John Price Thomas said Yasmin’s
success reflected the hard work and dedication of all the college’s teachers.
“As a college, we are confident that we provide a unique and
outstanding teaching and learning environment that has resulted in this
well-deserved award,” he added.
Yasmin was formally invited to attend an awards ceremony on July
20, when Baroness Shirley Williams hosted the reception for all winners at the
Houses of Parliament in London.
She was also automatically awarded a Pearson Teaching Awards
Fellowship.
Later in the year, she will attend a UK Pearson Teaching Awards
Ceremony, which will be broadcast on BBC Two.
This award follows the outstanding success of Cardiff Sixth Form
College’s A level students, who topped the UK league tables for academic
success in 2010. It is proof that the unique study methods and dedication of
all can result in national recognition for both staff and students.
