KUCHING: Primary schools in Sarawak recorded a
decline in pupils scoring A, B and C grades in both English and Science for
this year’s Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR).
A media statement from the Education Department
showed a 3.59 per cent drop in pupils scoring at least a C — the minimum level
of achievement — in English in the state’s Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK), when
compared to last year.
For Science, there was a drop of 3 per cent in
SK pupils achieving at least a C.
In Chinese medium schools or Sekolah Jenis
Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC), the percentage of pupils achieving at least a C in
English compared to last year dropped by 4.1 per cent. For Science, there was a
drop of 3.75 per cent.
No reason was given for the drop in performance
of UPSR candidates in both subjects.
A total of 88 schools (79 SK and nine SJKC) had
100 per cent of pupils scoring at least a C in all subjects.
This increased by 23 schools compared to 2010.
“Overall, 23,344 candidates or 55.52 per cent
(out of 43,849 candidates) succeeded in achieving at least a C in all subjects.
1,835 pupils (about 4 per cent) scored A’s in all the subjects taken by them,
of which 1,319 are from Sekolah Kebangsaan and 516 from Sekolah Jenis
Kebangsaan Cina,” said the statement signed by State Education director
Abdillah Adam.
UPSR results were released at all primary
schools yesterday. The candidates, including 215 from six private schools, sat
for the examination from Sept 13-15 at 1,282 centres statewide.
The statement noted that under the present
grading system, there is no labelling of pass or fail.
The statement added that there was an increase
in the percentage of pupils scoring at least a C in three subjects.
SK pupils achieved a 0.44 per cent increase for
Bahasa Melayu (Comprehension), 2.84 per cent increase for Bahasa Melayu
(Writing) and 0.85 per cent increase for Mathematics.
SJKC pupils managed a 0.44 per cent increase for
Mathematics, 3.72 per cent for Bahasa Cina (Comprehension) and 0.23 per cent
for Bahasa Cina (Writing). There were however, drops of 1.89 per cent for
Bahasa Melayu (Comprehension) and 2.77 per cent for Bahasa Melayu (Writing).
The Aptitude Test results for Primary 6 pupils
were also released yesterday but not stated in the UPSR slip.
The statement noted that candidates wishing to
know their Aptitude Test results could refer to UPSR rosters distributed to
their schools.
The schools, candidates and parents were
reminded that they can apply to have results revised within 30 days from
yesterday by writing directly to the Malaysian Examinations Board.
Any application received after Dec 17 would not
be considered.
