SENADIN, 29 February – A total of 2,381 pupils from Curtin University Sarawak (Curtin) were part of the first phase of students to received their 1Malaysia Book Voucher (BB1M) here today.
Their vouchers were handed out by the Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin during his visit to the university.
In his simple address, Lee urged the recipients to use the vouchers wisely and warned them not to sell the vouchers which are worth RM200 each, for profit.
“The government is giving out these vouchers to ease the burden of students in higher learning institutions.
“Unfortunately some unscruplous students are misusing these vouchers by selling them,” Lee pointed out adding that the vouchers programme is also aimed at encouraging students to read.
Meanwhile Chief Operating Officer (COO) Nicholas Ching disclosed that more than 400 students will also receive their BB1M in the second phase of the programme schduled in March.
He added that the university is expecting to receive more applications for the aid from those who registered late as well as new students.
BB1M is one of the initiatives announced by the Prime Minister under Budget 2012 involving an allocation of RM260 million. A total of 1.3 million students are expected to benefit from the programme.
