KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 16, 2012): Hundreds of students from various public higher institutions (IPTAs) held a protest against interference in campus elections at Merdeka Square here today.
They included members of the Malaysian Students Solidarity, Coalition of Malaysian Islamic Students, and Malaysia Youth and Students Democratic Movement.
Pro-Mahasiswa National chairman Edikoup Lakip Sediyanto said the students submitted six demands on campus elections, namely fixing of election date, students' involvement in managing campus elections, monitoring, freedom in campaigning, transparency in the voting system, and an allocation for candidates.
"Therefore, we hope campus elections this time around will be monitored and be rated on its transparency," said Edikoup.
Campus elections will be held at 20 IPTAs starting next week.
Meanwhile, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah urged IPTA students to take part in campus elections in the best possible manner. – Bernama
