KUCHING: Sarawak Bumiputera Teacher’s Union (KGBS) would like the Ministry of Education (MOE) to allow former untrained teachers who do not have a degree and followed a special pre-Bachelor of Education programme in the teaching institutes across the country to be trained as qualified teachers in three and a half years instead of five years.
Its president Ahmad Malie in a statement to The Borneo Post said this was based on the fact that these untrained teachers already had more than two years of teaching experiences.
In addition, Malie also pointed out those teachers who were selected to attend the programme had the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) qualification and a diploma.
Furthermore, these untrained teachers already had excellent records during their service and their records should be recognised and not go to waste.
Malie said that MOE should seriously consider their suggestion and review their policy in an era where the teaching profession is moving towards transformation and in view of the development of the new education blueprint that had just been announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently.
Malie said the pre-Bachelor of Education programme offered by teachers training institutes across the country started in the beginning of the year.
