KUCHING: Open Universiti Malaysia (OUM) is set to open up another centre in Bintulu come September to cater for the needs of the numerous industries there.

Its national vice-president (Students Affairs and Campus Development) Dr Rosli Hamir said the Bintulu centre is a way for OUM to help the government meet the demand of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) for skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Rosli said theBintulu centre will be OUM’s fourth in Sarawak after Kuching, Sibu and Miri.
OUM offers around 60 programmes from diploma right up to PhD level, he told a press conference before OUM Sarawak’s graduation and alumni dinner at a hotel here on Sunday night.

OUM has about 35,000 students from 22 centres in the nation. It has nine overseas centres catering to about 2,000 students.

Rosli said OUM will be providing study materials and references that can be downloaded into tablets from July 2 – the launch date for application.

“This will enable our students to study anywhere they like. On top of that, references and study materials in Bahasa Malaysia can be obtained through the application,” he said.

Also present at the press conference were senior general manager cum registrar Kamariah Mohd Noor; OUM director of Centre for Student Management, Prof Dr Santhi Raghavan; OUM Sarawak Learning Centre director Lindsay Brangking; and president of Students’ Club and OUM Sarawak Alumni, Rahmah Lariwoo.

Lindsay said the most popular course in Kuching centre is linked to early childhood education whereas it’s occupational safety and health in Miri or Bintulu.

These courses are the most popular because of increasing demand in the job market and business world, she added.
