SARIKEI: The spirit of patriotism is soaring high among the students of SMK Bandar Sarikei in conjunction with Merdeka month.

Besides holding Jalur Gemilang colouring contests and adorning their classes with the national flag, 16 special education students burned the midnight oil to create a giant Jalur Gemilang spanning seven feet wide and 55 feet long.

Under the guidance of their teacher Winson Tieu Chiong Sin, their labour of love for the country is now hanging in the school compound for all to see.

During a symbolic handing over ceremony yesterday, principal Mohamad Kassim Arbain said the whole idea was to instill in the students a strong sense of patriotism and belonging.

“All the activities organised this month are aimed at enhancing our students’ knowledge of the history of the country,” Mohamad Kassim said.
